The Sternum or breastbone is the long, flat bone in front of the rib cage, that protects the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. In other words, it protects life. And, if you take the different parts of the sternum – Manubrium, Gladiolus, Xiphoid – the words have deep meaning, for example, Gladiolus stems from the Latin gladius which means sword and Xiphoid means ‘resembling a sword’.
So, tattooing on the sternum itself is symbolic! Here are some wonderful examples of tattoo designs on the sternum like the spiritual Om, a mandala, a flaming rose, a dark spider, etc.
